The PHALA PROJECT

 

Good Nutrition is essential to child development. 

January 2017 The Timalechi Nursery School of Embangweni,Malawi & community partner Eka Asase Yaa of Sankofa Science Solutions (Dallas, Texas) launched "The Phala Project: Growing Our Own School Meals". This project seeks to provide a nutritious school meal to the under resourced children of Embangweni, Malawi in a way that is economically empowering and self-sustainable. As of may 2017 Timalechi School will provide a school meal to our students which was grown and harvested on another piece of land from Gogo Winston "Timalechi" Zimba. Currently 80 student's receive school meals of " Phala" (porridge). The project has created jobs for the community and addressed a great need for the children.The World Health Organization reports that malnutrition contributes to nearly half of the deaths of children under the age of 5. Studies show that school meals improve brain function, behavior & performance. The start up cost of this new project is only $250USD and an estimated $500USD to maintain annually.

CLEAN RUNNING WATER

We all know that water is life. 1 in 9 people worldwide do not have access to clean water. Access to clean running water is a major challenge that Timalechi Nursery School of Mzimba faces daily. Although clean water is available in the area, Timalechi school does not have its own private water source. Currently our teachers and volunteers travel on foot to collect 6-10 buckets of water in order to meet the needs of WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) daily. Timalechi school has only 1 out house toilet to serve 75-100 toddler students and 5 adult staff members. The high demand of providing drinking water as well as water for the purpose of hygiene and sanitation for nearly 100 children with no on site water source has resulted in the spread of communicable diseases and other preventable issues. Our goal for 2018 is to bring clean running water & plumbing to Timalechi Nursery School of Mzimba
